A new bank for small & medium-sized businesses

  1. Making bankers useful and trustworthy again.

Bankers are often perceived as poorly-disguised salesmen with rarely enough authority to make decisions and tools so outdated they are of little use to their customers.

But it doesn’t have to be this way: we want today’s bankers to play the valuable role in society they once did. We believe bankers can and should be empowered. Well-equipped and properly-trained bankers have the potential to be the modern day financial heroes that so many companies have been waiting for.

  2. Using technology everywhere. Making it work for everyone.

We are thoroughly convinced that technology should be used everywhere for the benefit of all. Administrative and time-consuming tasks should be automated so that people can focus their time and energy on the things that matter most. This is why we are building our entire tech stack from the ground up, one brick at a time.

We believe having a clean infrastructure free from technical debt is the only way to provide our customers and bankers with state-of-the-art solutions.

  3. Transparency in all we do.

Who has access to my bank account? Why have I been charged additional fees? How is my money invested? Where is my money stored? Is it even safe?

We believe that a modern bank should be able to provide a clear response to each of these questions and practice total transparency in pricing, cash management, security, delays, etc.

Our mission

We have a simple, yet ambitious goal: to provide French and European SMBs with the financial products and services they deserve. In order to do this, we founded Memo Bank, the first independent bank created in France over the past 50 years. We want to build the best team there is, a team capable of designing a wide range of state-of-the-art banking products and services, relying on a clean technical infrastructure with top-notch security.

We are still a young company, so you’ll have the chance to join the project from its beginnings. You’ll work in a company with almost no technical debt (well, at least compared to traditional banks) or antiquated internal administrative procedures. You’ll have carte blanche to define with us the future products our bank will offer. We put a strong emphasis on teamwork, but also give our team members clearly defined areas of responsibility in which to act and grow. We explain this in more detail in our Playbook.

The purpose of this playbook is to describe who we are, how we think, and how we work together. While it was designed as an internal reference to be used by all of our teams, we decided to make it public so that candidates can get an idea of what they can expect from us.

Humans & Technology

Human beings are social animals who like to connect and share. We live in a world where technology is becoming more and more prevalent. Some people see this evolution as a dehumanization of society. We see it as an historical opportunity for human beings to connect easily, break down the walls of old hierarchies, and afford more opportunities and social justice.

We value discussion, intelligence, design, and more broadly, all forms of art. We use technology as a tool, and not as an end in itself, to simplify life.

We are human beings doing work for other humans. We like to help and delight people. We care.

It’s all about the Team

We work with people who enjoy working in teams and believe that the whole is larger than the sum of its parts. We value people who put the spotlight on the team rather than on themselves. We like honesty and altruism.

We work as a team. If we have to choose between the team and an individual, we always choose the team.

Trust & Transparency

Trust is the basis of any relationship. Deep trust doesn’t happen overnight. It needs to be built over time, but we do our best to nurture the process and make it easy. We tend to trust people readily and expect trust to grow naturally and quickly.

We don’t compromise on trust, though. Break the trust once and don’t be surprised to start from scratch. So, keep your promises. Commit. Help others. Be there. Give your best.

Transparency comes together with trust. Team members make all internal activities completely accessible to the entire team: meeting reports, discussions, roadmaps, releases, etc. Nobody should encounter any friction in accessing information. We trust everybody to make the best use of the information at their disposal.

We try to have the highest ethics, to be honest and open-minded at all times. We always seek excellence and try to produce the best work possible given the constraints we have. We are diligent and pay attention to detail.

High expectations work both ways. The company and the team have high expectations of every team member, but team members should also have high expectations of the company and how it behaves both internally and externally.

Being comfortable with complexity

There is no such thing as a “simple job”. Being excellent in any job is complex.

If you want to do things well and achieve a high level of expertise, get to the top of your game, seek excellence, you need to master every detail. You need to understand the problem inside and out. The path is difficult and takes time.

It is important then to be humble and to be comfortable with the complexities we are faced with. Even for things that look easy, you should never underestimate or oversimplify. Instead, you must try to understand all the subtleties. It is easy to think that something should be simple to do; it is much harder to actually do it well.

We believe it is always quicker to take the time to properly think about a problem before solving it. We understand the extraordinary value of focusing on something during an uninterrupted period of time.

Be happy

This is the most important, of course. Do what you love to do. We will succeed because we are happy, not the contrary.
